It's understandable to notice and want to look into any change in Fifi's routine — you know her best, and a shift in eating habits is always worth paying attention to.
The good news is that the picture you're describing — still eating treats, drinking water normally, no weight loss, and acting like herself — is generally a more reassuring one than if she were refusing everything or seeming unwell. That said, a reduced appetite in an 8-year-old dog is still worth understanding.
A few things that commonly contribute to a reduced appetite in dogs like Fifi:
- Dental discomfort. Poodles can be prone to dental issues, and if her kibble or regular food requires more chewing, she may be avoiding it while still accepting soft treats. Check for any signs of drooling, pawing at her mouth, or bad breath.
- Mild digestive upset. Sometimes a dog's stomach just feels "off" for a day or two, and they self-regulate by eating less.
- Food freshness or a formula change. Dogs can notice subtle changes in their food — a new bag from a different production batch, food that's been open a while, or a recent formula update from the manufacturer.
- Stress or routine changes. Even small changes in the household can affect appetite, especially in a dog who relies heavily on her other senses.
- Age-related changes. At 8, some dogs naturally begin to show shifts in appetite or food preferences.
Some gentle things you can try at home:
- Make sure her food is fresh and stored properly (sealed container, away from heat).
- Try warming her food slightly — this can make it more aromatic and appealing.
- Check that her bowl and feeding area haven't changed in a way that might be disorienting for her.
- Keep her feeding schedule as consistent as possible.
- Note whether she's eating some of her meal or skipping it entirely.
When to see your vet:
Since Fifi is currently acting normally and maintaining her weight, this isn't an emergency — but it's still worth a vet visit if:
- The reduced appetite continues for more than 48–72 hours
- She starts losing weight
- She begins refusing treats or water
- You notice vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or any behavioral changes
- You see any signs of mouth discomfort
Given her age, I'd recommend scheduling a routine check-in with your vet within the next week or so even if things improve slightly — an 8-year-old dog benefits from having a vet take a look when eating habits shift, just to rule out anything going on beneath the surface. It's also a great opportunity for a dental check.
