It's so exciting that you've welcomed Storm into your home — congratulations on the adoption! A one-year-old mixed-breed dog coming from a shelter is starting a big new chapter, and it's completely normal to wonder where to begin with training.

Give him a few days to decompress first. Shelter life is stressful, and even the most confident dogs need time to decompress in a new environment. For the first few days, keep things calm and low-key. Let Storm explore at his own pace, establish a routine (same feeding times, same potty spots), and just let him get used to you and your home before expecting much from formal training sessions.

Yes — slow and steady is exactly right. Short, positive sessions work far better than long, intense ones, especially for a dog still figuring out his new world. Think 5–10 minutes, two or three times a day. End on a win so he feels good about the experience.

Start with the basics:
- Name recognition — say his name, reward when he looks at you
- Sit — one of the easiest foundations and builds confidence
- Come (recall) — one of the most important skills for safety
- Leash manners — especially important for an energetic young dog

Use positive reinforcement. Reward the behaviors you want with small treats, praise, or play — whatever Storm finds motivating. Avoid punishment-based methods, which can increase anxiety in a dog still learning to trust a new family.

Be consistent. Everyone in the household should use the same cues and rules. If "off" means don't jump, everyone needs to use "off," not "down" or "get off." Consistency is what helps dogs learn fastest.

Consider a group obedience class. A local positive-reinforcement class is a great investment for a newly adopted young dog. It helps with socialization, gives you guided instruction, and builds your bond with Storm at the same time.

If Storm shows any signs of fear, resource guarding (growling over food or toys), or anxiety during training, slow way down and consider working with a certified professional trainer or behaviorist.

When to see your vet: Since Storm was just adopted, scheduling a wellness visit in the next week or two is a great idea even if he seems healthy. Your vet can review his shelter records, check for anything that might affect his behavior or energy levels, and make sure he's up to date on vaccines and parasite prevention. If you notice any signs of illness — vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, coughing, or significant changes in appetite — don't wait; call your vet sooner.
