Great question — staying on top of vaccinations is one of the best things you can do for Michu's long-term health!
Rabies vaccination schedules for cats generally follow one of two patterns, depending on the vaccine used and local regulations:
- Initial vaccine: Kittens typically receive their first rabies shot around 12–16 weeks of age. After that first shot, a booster is usually given one year later.
- After the first booster: Depending on the specific vaccine your vet uses, cats may be vaccinated either every year or every three years going forward.
A few important things to keep in mind:
- Local laws matter. Many cities, counties, and states have legal requirements for how often cats must be vaccinated against rabies. Your vet will know the rules in your area.
- Vaccine type matters. There are both 1-year and 3-year rabies vaccines available for cats. Your vet chooses based on what's approved in your region and what's appropriate for your individual cat.
- Indoor vs. outdoor status is sometimes factored into the conversation, but rabies vaccination is generally recommended (and often legally required) for all cats regardless — because even indoor cats can occasionally encounter wildlife.
At 5 years old, Michu is right in the middle of his adult years, so this is a great time to confirm he's up to date and set a reminder for his next visit.
If you're not sure when his last rabies vaccine was, your vet's office can usually look that up from their records — and if Michu is registered with PRR, your vaccination history may be part of his profile there too.
When to see your vet: If you're unsure whether Michu is currently up to date on his rabies vaccine, schedule a wellness visit soon — ideally within the next few weeks. Your vet can review his vaccination history, bring him current if needed, and let you know which schedule makes sense going forward. This is also a great opportunity for a general checkup!
