Why Does My Shih Tzu Have Bumps on Skin?

It's completely understandable to be concerned when you notice something new on Cosmo's skin — especially with a young pup! Skin bumps in puppies are actually pretty common, and there are several things that can cause them.

For a 4-month-old Shih Tzu like Cosmo, some of the more common reasons for skin bumps include:

• Puppy acne or folliculitis — Young dogs can develop small pimple-like bumps, especially around the muzzle and chin, due to hair follicle irritation or minor bacterial involvement.
• Allergic reactions — Puppies can react to new foods, environmental things like grass or pollen, grooming products, or even fabrics. Shih Tzus in particular are known to have sensitive skin.
• Insect bites or stings — A single raised bump or a cluster can sometimes be from a bug bite.
• Ringworm — Despite the name, this is actually a fungal infection (not a worm) that can cause patchy, sometimes raised or scaly spots on the skin.
• Mange — A skin condition caused by tiny mites that can cause bumps, hair loss, and itching, and is more common in young dogs whose immune systems are still developing.
• Normal puppy skin changes — Sometimes bumps are just part of a puppy's skin maturing.

Here are a few gentle at-home steps you can take while you monitor the situation:

• Check the bumps carefully — Are they red, oozing, crusty, or spreading? Is Cosmo scratching or licking at them?
• Think back over the past few days — Did you introduce a new food, shampoo, or let him play somewhere new?
• Avoid squeezing or picking at any bumps, as this can cause irritation or infection.
• Hold off on new grooming products until you know what's going on.

Shih Tzus have a long, dense coat that can sometimes trap moisture and debris close to the skin, which makes them a little more prone to skin issues — so keeping an eye on this is a smart move.

When to see your vet: Because Cosmo is only 4 months old and still building his immune system, I'd recommend having a vet take a look fairly soon — within the next day or two if possible, or sooner if needed. Definitely don't wait if you notice:

• The bumps are spreading quickly
• He's scratching, biting, or rubbing the area constantly
• The bumps look red, swollen, or are oozing
• You notice hair loss around the bumps
