It sounds like Sophia has a big fan in your girlfriend! This is actually really sweet and pretty common dog behavior — nothing to worry about at all.
Dogs are naturally social animals, and many of them form quick, strong attachments to new people, especially people who are calm, kind, or who smell interesting (your girlfriend may use a lotion, shampoo, or perfume that Sophia finds appealing — dogs experience the world largely through scent).
A few reasons Sophia might be sticking so close:
- Curiosity — A new person in the home is exciting and worth investigating thoroughly.
- Affection-seeking — If your girlfriend has been petting or talking to Sophia, Sophia has already learned she's a great source of attention.
- Pack instinct — Dogs often like to keep their "people" in sight, especially in an unfamiliar social situation. Following someone to the bathroom is very classic dog behavior — it's how they'd stay close to a companion in the wild.
- Personality — Some dogs are just naturally velcro-dogs who want to be near everyone, all the time.
The bathroom-following in particular is one of the most common things dog owners notice and laugh about. Dogs genuinely don't understand why we close doors, and they'd prefer we didn't.
As long as Sophia isn't showing any signs of anxiety (excessive panting, whining, destructive behavior) or being pushy or possessive in a way that makes your girlfriend uncomfortable, this is just a happy, social dog doing happy, social dog things.
When to see your vet: Honestly, this situation doesn't call for a vet visit at all — it sounds like completely normal, healthy behavior! The only time social behavior like this would be worth mentioning to a vet is if it shifted into something more intense, like Sophia becoming distressed when your girlfriend leaves, refusing to eat, or showing signs of anxiety. Otherwise, enjoy having a dog with great taste in people! 🐾
