Why does she keep pooping in the house instead of outside even after punishment

It's really frustrating when house training isn't sticking, especially when you feel like you've been consistent. The good news is that this is a very common challenge, and there's a lot you can do to turn things around with Hemi.

First, something important to know: punishment after the fact almost never works for house training. Dogs live very much in the moment, and unless you catch them in the act, they genuinely can't connect a scolding to something they did even a minute ago. What punishment often does instead is make a dog anxious or sneaky — they may start hiding to go, which makes the problem harder to solve. So if you've been correcting her after finding an accident, it's worth stopping that approach entirely.

Here are some things that tend to work much better:

• Increase outdoor trips. At 1 year old, Hemi should be going out first thing in the morning, after every meal, after naps, after play, and right before bed. French Bulldogs can still be solidly in the training window at this age.
• Watch for pre-poop signals. Sniffing the floor, circling, or suddenly leaving the room are common signs. When you see them, calmly take her outside right away.
• Reward heavily when she goes outside. The moment she finishes, give her enthusiastic praise and a small treat. That positive connection is what really builds the habit.
• Limit her freedom indoors. Until she's more reliable, keep her in the same room as you or use a crate or playpen when you can't watch her. Dogs are much less likely to soil a small space.
• Clean accidents thoroughly. Dogs are drawn back to spots that smell like previous accidents. Use an enzyme-based cleaner (available at most pet stores) to fully break down the odor.

One more thing worth mentioning: French Bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed, meaning they have that adorable flat face — but it can sometimes come with digestive sensitivities that make bowel habits less predictable. If Hemi's stools seem loose, frequent, or inconsistent, that could be a piece of the puzzle worth discussing with a vet.

When to see your vet: If Hemi is having accidents frequently and also showing signs like loose stool, straining, blood in her stool, vomiting, or a change in appetite or energy — schedule a vet visit soon, ideally within the next few days. It's also worth a call if the house training issue has been going on for more than a few weeks without improvement, just to rule out any underlying health reasons. A vet can also refer you to a trainer if behavioral support would help.
