Great question — and it's wonderful that you're thinking about this for Jaina while she's still young! Keeping a Labrador at a healthy weight is one of the best things you can do for her long-term health.

Typical weight range for adult female Labradors

Most adult female Labrador Retrievers fall somewhere between 55 and 70 pounds (25–32 kg). That said, there's real variation depending on her bone structure, muscle mass, and overall build — so the number on the scale is only part of the picture.

The "body condition score" is your best guide

Vets use something called a body condition score (BCS) — basically a hands-on assessment of how much fat and muscle your dog is carrying. Here's a simple at-home check:

  • Ribs: You should be able to feel her ribs easily with light pressure, but not see them prominently from across the room.
  • Waist: Looking down from above, she should have a visible waist — a slight narrowing behind the rib cage.
  • Tuck: Looking from the side, her belly should tuck up slightly behind the rib cage, not hang level or droop.

If she passes all three of those checks, she's likely in good shape regardless of the exact number on the scale.

A note on Jaina's age

At 11 months, Jaina is still finishing up her growth — most Labs reach their full adult size somewhere between 12 and 18 months. She may still fill out a little over the next few months, which is completely normal. This makes it a great time to establish healthy habits around food and exercise.

A few general tips for keeping a young Lab at a healthy weight:
- Feed a portion-controlled diet rather than free-feeding (Labs are famously food-motivated and will overeat if given the chance!)
- Use her daily food allowance as treats during training to avoid adding extra calories
- Make sure she's getting regular exercise — but avoid very high-impact activity until her growth plates have fully closed, typically around 12–18 months

When to see your vet:
Schedule a weight check at Jaina's next routine visit (which should be coming up around her 1-year mark anyway). If she seems to be gaining weight rapidly, losing weight without a diet change, or if you're unsure whether her current weight is appropriate for her frame, bring it up sooner. Your vet can do a proper body condition assessment and give you a personalized target weight for her specifically.
