My 7-year-old Golden Retriever has barely touched his food for the last two days. He normally inhales his meals. Should I be worried?

It's definitely understandable to be concerned when a dog like a Golden Retriever — a breed famous for its enthusiasm at mealtimes — suddenly loses interest in food. A healthy Golden at 7 years old is entering his senior years, and changes in appetite can mean a number of different things.
Short-term appetite dips can sometimes be caused by minor stomach upset, stress from changes in routine (a move, new family members, or even a shift in weather), or simply being a bit under the weather. Some dogs will also turn their nose up at food if it's gone stale or if you've recently switched brands or formulas.
There are a few things you can try at home. Make sure his food is fresh, and try warming it slightly to release the aroma — this can make kibble more appealing. You might also offer a small amount of plain boiled chicken and white rice to see if he's willing to eat something bland. Make sure he has access to fresh water and is staying hydrated.
That said, Golden Retrievers are prone to certain health conditions as they age, and a sustained loss of appetite is something worth taking seriously.
When to see your vet: If your dog hasn't eaten for more than 48 hours, is showing other symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or weight loss, or if this is unusual behavior for him, it's a good idea to schedule a veterinary visit. Your vet can rule out underlying causes and give you peace of mind.
